Selected Mass Reading

Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 105:2-3, 4-5, 6-7

Sing to him, yea sing praises to him: relate all his wondrous works. Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord. Seek ye the lord, and be strengthened: seek his face evermore. Remember his marvellous works which he hath done; his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth. O ye seed of Abraham his servant; ye sons of Jacob his chosen. He is the Lord our God: his judgments are in all the earth.

Feast Days

Albert of Genoa Hermit, Mystic 1090–1180

Saint Albert of Genoa, also known as Lambert of Genoa, was born in Genoa, Italy, and from an early age felt drawn to a life hidden with Christ. Seeking to serve God with simplicity and fidelity, he entered a nearby Cistercian abbey, embracing the humble vocation of a lay brother. In the quiet rhythm of monastic life—marked by prayer, work, and obedience—Albert grew in holiness not through public deeds, but through steadfast devotion and a heart surrendered to God. Within the same monastic setting, he also lived as a hermit, choosing deeper solitude so that his whole life might become a continual offering of praise. His witness reminds the Church that sanctity often blossoms in silence, where love is purified and the soul learns to listen. Venerated for his contemplative life and persevering humility, Saint Albert is especially honored as patron of Sestri Ponente. His feast day is celebrated on July 8.

Augustine Zhao Rong
Augustine Zhao Rong Diocesan priest, Former soldier, Martyr 1746–1815

Augustine Zhao Rong was born in 1746 in Wuchuan County, Guizhou, China. At twenty he entered the Qing imperial army, and in the course of the anti-Christian persecutions he was assigned to guard imprisoned Christians. In 1785 he escorted Father Gabriel-Taurin Dufresse, a missionary under arrest, on the long journey to Beijing. Moved by the priest’s faith and charity, Zhao Rong began to seek the truth of the Gospel. After Father Gabriel was released, he baptized Zhao Rong, who received the name Augustine. Newly aflame with love for Christ, Augustine discerned a call to the priesthood. After formation, he was ordained only five years after his baptism by François Pottier, Apostolic Vicar of Szechwan. Serving faithfully, he was known for bringing many to the faith and was sent to minister in Yunnan. Under renewed persecution during the reign of the Jiaqing Emperor, Augustine was arrested, tortured, and commanded to renounce Christ. He refused, and in the winter of 1815 he died in prison from beatings, honored as the first martyred Chinese priest. His feast day is July 9.

Saint Kilian
Saint Kilian Bishop, Priest, Missionary, Martyr 640–689

Saint Kilian was born around 640 to noble parents in Cloughballybeg near Mullagh, in what is now County Cavan, Ireland. Formed by prayer and learning, he is remembered as a monk and missionary bishop, educated in the great Irish schools and, according to tradition, connected with the monastic life associated with Iona. In the summer of 686 he set out with companions across Gaul to Rome, seeking the Church’s blessing for missionary work, and received authority for his mission from Pope Conon. Kilian then traveled to Würzburg in East Franconia, where pagan customs still held sway. With the priest Colmán and the deacon Totnan, he preached Christ with courage and patience, winning Duke Gozbert and many of his people to the faith. His fidelity to the Gospel also led him to denounce the duke’s unlawful marriage to his brother’s widow. For this, Kilian and his two companions were seized and beheaded, sealing their witness with martyrdom. Venerated as the Apostle of Franconia, he is patron of Franconia, Heilbronn, and Würzburg. His feast day is July 8.
