Selected Mass Reading

First Reading — Song of Songs 3:1-4b

In my bed by night I sought him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, and found him not. I will rise, and will go about the city: in the streets and the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, and I found him not. The watchmen who keep the city, found me: Have you seen him, whom my soul loveth? When I had a little passed by them, I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him: and I will not let him go, till I bring him into my mother's house, and into the chamber of her that bore me.

Mary Magdalene
Mary Magdalene Disciple of Jesus, Myrrhbearer, Witness of the Resurrection d. 100

Mary Magdalene was likely born in Magdala, a fishing town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. The Gospels remember her as a devoted disciple who, after being healed by Jesus—delivered from “seven demons”—followed Him closely and helped provide for His ministry. When many fled in fear, Mary remained steadfast: she stood among the women who witnessed the Crucifixion, and she was present at His burial. At dawn after the Sabbath, Mary went to the tomb and became the first witness of the Resurrection. Sent to announce the risen Lord to the apostles, she is honored in the Church as the “Apostle to the Apostles,” a luminous sign that Christ entrusts His saving message to faithful hearts. Over time, some traditions mistakenly conflated her with other figures, yet the Church today emphasizes her true Gospel role as disciple, witness, and herald of Easter joy. She is venerated as a patron of Provence, repentant sinners and converts, women, and the contemplative life. Her feast day is July 22.
