Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 33:1-2, 4-5, 10-11

A psalm for David. Rejoice in the Lord, O ye just: praise becometh the upright. Give praise to the Lord on the harp; sing to him with the psaltery, the instrument of ten strings. For the word of the Lord is right, and all his works are done with faithfulness. He loveth mercy and judgment; the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord. The Lord bringeth to nought the counsels of nations; and he rejecteth the devices of people, and casteth away the counsels of princes. But the counsel of the Lord standeth for ever: the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

Saints Memorialized Today

Augustine of Hippo
Augustine of Hippo Bishop, Catholic priest, Theologian, Philosopher, Writer, Preacher 354–430

Augustine was born on 13 November 354 in Thagaste in Roman North Africa, in what is now Souk Ahras, Algeria. Raised by his devout mother, Monica, and a father who came to faith late in life, he grew into a brilliant student of rhetoric, yet his heart wandered. In Carthage he pursued pleasure and ambition, was drawn to Manichaeism, and later searched for truth through philosophy, all while carrying the weight of sin he would later confess with striking honesty. He lived for many years with a woman who bore him a son, Adeodatus, whom he deeply loved. In time, grace broke through his restlessness. After his conversion and baptism in 386, Augustine devoted his formidable mind to Christ and the Church, eventually becoming bishop of Hippo Regius. Through works like Confessions and The City of God, he helped shape Western Christian faith, especially teaching on grace, sin, and the life of the Church as God’s city amid the world’s turmoil. He is venerated as a Doctor of the Church and patron of the Augustinians and many places, including Agosta. His feast day is June 15.

Feast Days

Pelagius of Novigrad
Pelagius of Novigrad Martyr 270–283

Saint Pelagius was born in Pannonia to wealthy Christian parents, in the early days when the Church still lived under the shadow of persecution. Drawn to serve Christ and His people, he became a deacon, giving his life to the humble ministries of prayer, charity, and the proclamation of the Gospel. During the reign of the emperor Numerian, Pelagius was arrested in the imperial crackdown on Christians. Though still a young man, he endured severe torture rather than deny the Lord he loved, and he sealed his witness with martyrdom around the year 283. Little else is known of his earthly story, yet the Church remembers him for what matters most: steadfast faith, courageous confession, and fidelity unto death. Pelagius was first especially honored in Novigrad in Istria, and he is revered in both the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions. He is regarded as patron of Novigrad, and also of Konstanz through the later transfer of relics associated with him. His feast day is August 28.

Saint Hermes
Saint Hermes Martyr 100–120

Saint Hermes was born in Greece and later came to Rome, where he gave his life for Christ as a martyr around the year 120. Though few details of his earthly life have reached us with certainty, the Church has long remembered him among the early witnesses who chose fidelity to the holy name of Jesus above safety and honor. Ancient Christian records preserve his name, and devotion grew around his burial place on the Old Salarian Way. There, the Catacomb of Sant’Ermete bears his memory, and a great basilica was raised over his tomb in the early centuries, a sign of how deeply the faithful revered his sacrifice. Across time, relics associated with Saint Hermes were carried to different parts of Europe, strengthening local churches and inspiring pilgrimages, especially in Ronse, where he became known as a helper for those afflicted by mental illness. He is also honored as patron of Forte dei Marmi, Gabicce Mare, and Ischia di Castro. Saint Hermes is celebrated on August 28.

St. Julian of Brioude
St. Julian of Brioude Soldier, Martyr 300–304

Saint Julian of Brioude was born in Vienne in Gaul, in what is now France, and suffered martyrdom around the year 304. In a time of persecution, he was urged by his friend Saint Ferréol to flee Vienne, and he sought refuge in the region of Clermont, hiding in the home of a poor woman. When he learned that the authorities were searching for him, Julian chose the path of courageous witness: he came forward and surrendered himself, accepting death for Christ. He was beheaded, and tradition says his executioners washed his head in a nearby spring, while his body was reverently buried at Brioude by two elderly men who were strengthened by a miracle. Julian’s intercession was long sought for healing and protection, especially at the spring associated with his death and at his tomb, where a great basilica later rose. He remains honored in several communities, including Baldissero Torinese, Barbania, Gavorrano, and Sambuco. His feast day is August 28.

Vicinius of Sarsina
Vicinius of Sarsina Bishop d. 330

Saint Vicinius, believed to have been born in Liguria, lived at the dawn of the fourth century and died in 330. As persecution threatened the Church under Diocletian and Maximinus, he withdrew in humility to a mountain near Sarsina, embracing a hermit’s life of prayer and penitence on what is now called Monte San Vicinio. When the clergy and faithful of Sarsina gathered to choose a bishop, a divine sign was said to appear over the mountain, and the solitary ascetic was called from his retreat to shepherd the local Church as its first bishop, serving from about 303 until his death. Even as bishop, Vicinius returned often to solitude, drawing strength from silence and communion with God. He was remembered as a miracle-worker, especially for deliverance from demonic oppression and for healing of body and mind. A penitential iron collar he wore became a lasting sign of his intercession and is still used for blessings in the basilica at Sarsina, where pilgrims seek his aid. He is honored as patron of Sarsina, Pugliano, and Torriana. His feast day is August 28.
