Biography
Saint Bonaventure was born in 1221 at Civita di Bagnoregio in central Italy, the son of Giovanni di Fidanza and Maria di Ritella. As a young man he believed he was spared an early death through the prayers of Saint Francis of Assisi, a grace that helped kindle his lifelong love for the Franciscan way. He entered the Order of Friars Minor in 1243 and studied theology at the University of Paris, where his learning and holiness led him to teach and to guide others with clarity and charity.
Elected Minister General of the Franciscans, Bonaventure steered the order along a faithful, moderate path, uniting intellectual rigor with deep devotion. His writings—especially The Mind’s Road to God—show how faith seeks understanding and blossoms into mystical union with Christ, “the one true master.” He later became Cardinal Bishop of Albano and served the Church at the Second Council of Lyon, where he died on July 15, 1274.
Canonized in 1482 and named a Doctor of the Church, the “Seraphic Doctor,” he is honored as patron of places including Bagnoregio. His feast day is July 15.
