Biography
Saint Narcisa de Jesús Martillo Morán was born on October 29, 1832, in the village of San José de Nobol, Ecuador, the sixth of nine children in a devout family. After her mother’s death, she helped shoulder the work of the home, yet even as a girl she set her heart on prayer, turning a small room into a chapel and seeking quiet solitude for contemplation. Gentle and generous, she became known for a life of purity, austerity, and deep love for Christ.
When her father died in 1852, Narcisa moved to Guayaquil, where she supported herself as a seamstress and poured her earnings into caring for the poor, the sick, and abandoned children, while also helping her siblings. Drawn ever more to silence and penance, she eventually discerned a Dominican vocation as a tertiary and, in 1868, went to Lima, living near the Dominicans at Patrocinio. There she embraced long hours of prayer, strict fasting, and a hidden life of offering.
She died on December 8, 1869, and devotion quickly spread, confirmed by miracles and her canonization in 2008. Her feast day is December 8.
