Raymond Nonnatus

Saint Raymond Nonnatus was born around 1204 in Portell, Catalonia, in the Diocese of Urgell. His unusual surname, meaning “not born,” recalls the sorrowful beginning of his life: he was delivered by Caesarean section after his mother died in labor. As a boy he tended sheep and often withdrew to prayer at a rural chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas, already showing a heart formed by silence and trust in God. Drawn to religious life, Raymond entered the Mercedarian Order in Barcelona, founded to ransom Christians held captive in North Africa. Trained by Saint Peter Nolasco, he was ordained a priest in 1222 and later served as Master General. He redeemed many captives in Valencia and Algiers, and when funds failed in Tunis, he offered himself as a hostage for others. Tradition says his captors pierced his lips and padlocked his mouth to stop his preaching, making him a powerful intercessor for purity of speech and fidelity to the seal of confession. He died in 1240 near Cardona, Spain, and is venerated especially as patron of childbirth, midwives, pregnant women, children, and priests. His feast day is August 31.
