Biography
Saint Nicomedes was born in an unknown place and time, but he is remembered with quiet certainty as a martyr of the Roman Church. His life is largely hidden from history, yet his witness left a lasting mark on the faith of Rome. Ancient tradition associates him with the Christian community near the Via Nomentana, where he was buried in a catacomb close to the gate that bore the same name. Pilgrims in the early centuries sought out his tomb, and a church rose above his grave; in time it was restored by Pope Adrian I, a sign of the enduring devotion of the faithful. A titular church in Rome also bore his name, showing that his memory was cherished in the city’s liturgical life.
Though the details of his death are uncertain, later legends portray him as a priest who courageously served persecuted Christians and honored the bodies of the martyrs, sharing in their suffering. Saint Nicomedes is venerated as patron of Grondola. His feast day is celebrated on September 15.
