Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 98:1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4

A psalm for David himself. Sing ye to the Lord a new canticle: because he hath done wonderful things. His right hand hath wrought for him salvation, and his arm is holy. The Lord hath made known his salvation: he hath revealed his justice in the sight of the Gentiles. He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Narcisa de Jesús
Narcisa de Jesús Laywoman, Mystic 1832–1869

Saint Narcisa de Jesús Martillo Morán was born on October 29, 1832, in the village of San José de Nobol, Ecuador, the sixth of nine children in a devout family. After her mother’s death, she helped shoulder the work of the home, yet even as a girl she set her heart on prayer, turning a small room into a chapel and seeking quiet solitude for contemplation. Gentle and generous, she became known for a life of purity, austerity, and deep love for Christ. When her father died in 1852, Narcisa moved to Guayaquil, where she supported herself as a seamstress and poured her earnings into caring for the poor, the sick, and abandoned children, while also helping her siblings. Drawn ever more to silence and penance, she eventually discerned a Dominican vocation as a tertiary and, in 1868, went to Lima, living near the Dominicans at Patrocinio. There she embraced long hours of prayer, strict fasting, and a hidden life of offering. She died on December 8, 1869, and devotion quickly spread, confirmed by miracles and her canonization in 2008. Her feast day is December 8.
